Welcome to Novi Sad

The town is situated in the wide, fertile Vojvodina plains, on the left bank of the river Danube, between 1252nd and 1262nd kilometer of the river’s flow. It is a town with sandy beaches, a mountain at its back - Fruska Gora, a national park in which 16 monasteries and famous vineyards can be found.

The integral part of Novi Sad are Petrovaradin, Sremska Kamenica and Sremski Karlovci, a town 12 kilometers away and the place of old Serbian spirituality and learning.

The traces of the central European medieval culture in Novi Sad have been preserved in the old buildings of different styles, in a series of institutions like "Matica srpska" (founded in Pest, Hungary 1826, moved to Novi Sad in 1862), Serbian National Theatre, the oldest Serbian theatre, founded in 1861, the first Serbian Grammar school 1810, the citadel of Petrovaradin built between 1692 and 1780 on the remains of a Roman and a prehistoric forts. Nowadays it is a stage for the international music festival EXIT.

Many famous people who played important part in cultural and political life of the country such as Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj, Laza Kostic, Svetozar Miletic, Branko Radicevic, Mileva Maric Einstein, Miroslav Antic and Aleksandar Tisma were all born in Novi Sad.

Novi Sad is an important port on the Danube, a significant traffic junction, the centre of agriculture in the country and is in the same time the trading, industrial and educational centre. The population of this multinational and multicultural town is 300 000.
