NOVI SAD (FIBA U19 World Championship) - Brazil took a significant step towards the quarter-finals of the FIBA U19 World Championship in Novi Sad with an 89-77 victory over China on Wednesday.
Brazil will now qualify if Serbia beat Lithuania later on Wednesday.
Brazil and China started the day in the bottom two places in Group E and knew a win was vital.
That it ultimately went to the South Americans was in no small part to the performance of the outstanding Paulao Prestes, who poured in a match-high 26 points and also pulled down 14 rebounds.
It was the second virtuoso display in two days from the 19-year-old center, who notched a double-double of 26 points and 13 rebounds in a 104-65 loss to USA on Tuesday.
China led 19-16 after the first quarter but runs of 11-0 and 12-0 in the second gave Brazil a commanding advantage they did not relinquish.
Although Prestes was the star, other Brazilians also distinguished themselves, most notably Betinho Duarte (19 points) and Thomas Melazzo (16 points and seven rebounds).
China, whose record now reads 1-5, got 23 points from Yong Xu.
